A common procedure, an Upper EGD, is an examination of the lining of the stomach, esophagus, and upper intestinal tract. It’s used to find the source of swallowing problems, abdominal discomfort, reflux, or intestinal bleeding via the use of a camera positioned at the end of a flexible tube.
You’ll be required to follow a clear liquid diet for eight hours before your appointment. Please consult our EGD Preparation page for details. Overall, the procedure is not considered painful, and patients are given medication to reduce any discomfort.

What to Expect the Day of Your Procedure
Please arrange for a ride to and from your procedure. You’ll need to arrive 30 minutes early at our front desk reception area. Your ride is permitted to wait there, or they can provide their phone number to our staff. Upon check-in, you’ll be led back by one of our nurses to be admitted and meet with your physician.
Please have your ride save our office number (207-773-7964) in their phone, as we will be calling them 15-20 minutes before your discharge. After your procedure, you will speak with your doctor and meet up with your ride in our recovery area.
