What is a FibroScan?

FibroScan is a non-invasive test used to measure the stiffness of the liver in patients with liver disease. Staging your liver stiffness helps your healthcare provider determine the best course of treatment for your disease. FibroScan may also be used to monitor your liver during treatment to track effectiveness.

How do I Prepare for a Fibro Scan?

  • No Solid foods three hours before your exam. You may have small amounts of liquids.
  • Wear a loose-fitting shirt to allow the technician to expose the skin covering your right rib cage to complete the exam.
  • Continue taking any medications you are currently using.
  • You may drive yourself to and from the appointment

Are there any precautions?

The FibroScan cannot be performed if you are pregnant. Please advise your doctor if you think this applies to you.

What to expect during a Fibro can?

During the exam, you will be lying on your back with your right arm tucked behind your head. A technician will place a probe, like an ultrasound probe, on your right side in the area where your liver is. The probe sends a vibration which will travel through the liver. The speed the vibration travels through the liver determines the stiffness of the liver. The exam itself usually takes 5-10 minutes.

What should I expect after a FibroScan?

The results of your FibroScan will be reviewed by a doctor trained to read the scans. A report will be generated and sent to your primary care physician.
